We were in Paris for Fashion Week and saw displays of some of the newest fashions coming out. We also visited Matali Crasset´s studio and an interesting store & cafe called Merci. Of course we visited museums too - such as the Louvre, the museum of Decorative Arts, the Quai Branly museum, the Centre Pompidou, the Musée D´Orsay, the Rodin museum and the Eiffel Tower. *kb

London Design Festival! A colourful week filled with furniture, showrooms, architecture, design, vintage stores and not so many fish ´n chips. We visited the Kvadrat showroom, and the Established & Sons production and Limited showrooms. We also went to TENT London and 100% Design, and saw the Royal Academy of Art, among much more. *kb
WORKSHOP.boisbuchet

During the first week of August, our class went to the Domaine de Boisbuchet - a country estate in the southwest of France where workshops are hosted by the Vitra Design Museum and the Centre Georges Pompidou. The week we were there had 3 workshops going on, all with Spanish designers leading them - coincidentally. Our group was with Gala Fernandez for the Back to Basics workshop. We started by taking and developing photos with pinhole cameras, then my work progressed to working with fabric on a large scale. The other designers present were Hector Serrano and Cul de Sac. *kb

We had a workshop with Jane ní Dhulchaointigh - a creator of new materials - to do the very same...We spent the week exploring and experimenting with materials to help us develop our thesis projects. First we were to choose 3 objects - then we destroyed the objects to start us off on creating new materials. I focused on working with tableware and dishware, including creating a flexible teapot and dishes with fabric and silicone. *kb

Frankfurt is a city full of museums and interesting architecture...so, naturally, we went museum hopping and building gawking! We saw the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Applied Art, the Städel Museum and many more. We also attended Techtextil & Material Vision, a Materials & Textiles fair. *kb

We travelled to Basel to see the Art Unlimited and Design Miami fairs. We also went on a bike tour around the city to see the architecture, and took a tour of the Vitra Design Museum & Campus, seeing the exhibit of the Campana Brothers. We also visited the Schaulager - a storehouse with a large gallery space for the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation´s collection of art. *kb

We had a communication workshop with Marloes ten Bhömer. The focus on the workshop was - no matter what our project was -to communicate well. I created a fictional character inspired by my grandma, and designed fictional objects that would help her to survive without having to overcome her extreme fears and behaviours. *kb
WORKSHOP.concept
MAY.2009
We worked with Ian Ferguson for the Concept Workshop. The brief was to design a recipe of actions that transform an objet without physically altering it - exploring human-object interaction. I took the word recipe literally and chose to investigate using a tin can. I used food from tin cans and prepared food using only a tin can to cut, mix and cook with. I made recipes to make an omelette, cookies and shaved ice & fruit with a tin can.*kb

For our second trip of the year, we travelled to Milan, Italy for the International Furniture Fair & Design Week. We were immersed in all things design, and all things Italian. I might even say that I saw too much good furniture and ate too much good pizza!
During the trip we did an on-site group project, creating a wall mural with the phrase NOTHING IS EVERYTHING. *kb

We went to the Casa Palacio in Madrid and spent the afternoon with the head chef Andrés Madrigal of the Alboroque restaurant. He showed us many interesting things, such as how if you cook 10 eggs for 10 different amounts of time, different cultures will prefer different eggs. We had a few taste and smell tests, and witnessed the chef at work. *kb
